LI empowers Latinas to be more effective organizers in their community and more engaged in the political process. Below are some tips when contacting elected officials.

LEGISLATIVE DO'S AND DONT'S

BY TELEPHONE

DO’S

  • Tell them your name
  • State your position on the bill and how you want them to vote
Don’t
  • Don’t be threatening
  • Don’t expect just because you a taxpayer they think the way you do

BY MAIL

DO

  • Keep your letter short – no more than one page
  • Stick to one issue per letter
  • Let them know what bill or issue you are writing about
  • Explain how the bill will affect you personally
  • Ask them to support how you feel

Don’t

  • Send form letters
  • Send letters without telling them your name

GENERAL

DO

  • Get you know your legislator, you can make a difference
  • Try to send mail or make phone calls when they are ready to hear the bill
  • Always say thanks

DON’T

  • Feel like you can’t make change
  • Don’t expect legislators to vote your way
