Campaign for Accountable Public Schools

An excellent education is the foundation for healthy students and healthy students are the foundation for a strong community!

The Campaign for Accountable Public Schools is designed to promote the fact that students, families and communities served by public schools have a stake in their education system. Coordinated by three community organizations, Latina Initiative, Padres y Jovenes Unidos and Colorado Organization for Latina Opportunity and Reproductive Rights (COLOR), the Campaign for Accountable Public Schools draws attention to the needs of our students and families in the public school system by collecting pledges during the 3-month period before the November 3, 2009 election.

Campaign for Accountable Public Schools Kick-Off!

On August 18, 2009, the Campaign for Accountable Public Schools launched its effort at the Denver Public School headquarters with a crowd composed of community organizations, community members, parents, and most importantly, students.

During the launch event, several community leaders spoke about the importance of coming together and shared their stories regarding their personal experience in Denver Public Schools. DPS Superintendent, Tom Boasberg showed his support for the Campaign for Accountable Public Schools by being one of the first to sign the pledge during the press conference.

"We as students, demand that our schools give us a good college preparatory education that ensure that all students are functioning at or above grade level so that they can achieve academically and succeed both now and in the future." declared, Amber a Jovenes Unidos student leader.

“We have come together as organizations and members of the community to ensure that a broad agenda that reflects the necessary pieces for student success are being represented.” stated Dusti Gurule, Executive Director of Latina Initiative.

Diane Amaya, a junior at Lincoln High School, shared one of the reasons she is passionate about participating in this campaign, “We as a community need to be able to get the information we need, not just evidence-based comprehensive sexuality education but health education, prevention and counseling services in the schools.”

Ensuring that all community members are educated on the importance of voting and are familiar with the issues is critical so they can then make informed decisions at the polls and hold their elected officials accountable for their actions once in office.
