VOTE NO ON AMENDMENT 48!
Help Us Defeat the So-Called “Personhood Amendment”
This fall, Colorado voters may be asked to amend our constitution to redefine “person” and to grant constitutional rights from the moment of fertilization. The proposed amendment is vague, dangerous and simply goes too far. It seeks to restrict women’s access to health care, it invites government intrusion into our personal lives, and, if it passes, it’s permanent.
As Latinas
While reproductive health issues like birth control and abortion can be controversial in the Latino community, we believe that each woman and her family must be free to make life decisions that are right for them.
A woman's health is central to the health of her family. The proposed constitutional change could arm women's health by allowing the government to interfere in family decision making about healthcare.
The Amendment Puts Women’s Health in Jeopardy
This amendment could threaten a woman’s health and control over her medical decisions.
Under this Constitutional change, a pregnant woman experiencing complications could be powerless to receive treatment for a disease or condition – like cancer -- if the treatment might harm the fetus.
This amendment could outlaw all abortions, even in the earliest weeks of pregnancy or in cases of rape, incest, or when the life or health of the woman is at risk.
This initiative could ban several of the most medically effective forms of birth control.
It Allows Government Intrusion into Our Personal Lives and Private Decisions
The wording of this amendment is unclear and open to interpretation. It could lead to government intrusion in our personal lives and private health care decisions.
The amendment is so vague it could allow government access to our medical records, dictate what kinds of birth control we use, or interfere with medical care for infertility.
It could even submit a woman and her doctor to criminal investigations for a miscarriage.
This Amendment Would Permanently Alter Our Constitution
Amending the Colorado Constitution should not be taken lightly.
This amendment sounds simple but has far-reaching implications. It is so vaguely worded its true effect is difficult to predict. There are bound to be unintended consequences.
It could affect everything from birth control, to stem cell research, to inheritance rights. We should be very careful before passing a Constitutional amendment that could have such major complications.
Join us in opposing the So-Called “Personhood Amendment.”
