WHO
Ward Connerly, is a California Millionaire, African American businessman, and former University of California Regent. He is also the founder and the chairman of the American Civil Rights Institute: a national organization in opposition to racial and gender preferences. He has personally made millions of dollars for his role in passing anti-equal opportunity ballot initiatives.
WHAT
Ward Connerly is campaigning for enactment of Amendment 46 in Colorado on the November 2008 ballot which would eliminate equal opportunity programs for women and minorities.
WHAT IS THE IMPACT ON COLORADO CITIZENS?
The initiative would impact public education programs, public employment, and public small business contracting.
If Amendment 46 is passed, any public program that aims to increase opportunities for women and minorities in education or business, including recruitment, training, and outreach would potentially be ELIMINATED. This could include state and local programs that target women & minorities such as:
- Fair housing and lending programs
- Programs that increase and promote diversity in higher education
- Public school programs that expose girls and minorities to math, science and technology professions that have long been dominated by men
- Minority and women-owned business contracting opportunities
- Gender based programs
- Pay equity for women
- Apprenticeship and training programs
IMPACTS IN STATES THAT PASSED ANTI-EQUAL OPPORTUNITY INITIATIVE
California
- Contracts to women and minority owned firms dropped from high of 27.7% to 8% in 2002.
- University of California at Berkley - Approximately 8000 students were offered enrollment in2003.
- Only 141 were African American students down from 252 in 1997.
- UCLA - In 2003, percentage of African American and Latino students was just over half of 1995 enrollment.
Washington
- University of Washington – Since passage of this initiative, the number of African American, Latino and Native American first year students dropped from 373 to 255.
- In four years, the percent of small business contracts awarded to African American firms dropped by over 50% to 1.1%.
